The only mark is a small spot of darker chocolate toning in the field close before the neck. M-LDS, die state b. The fine repunching seen under the 8 in the early state has been lapped off the die. Great sharpness and eye appeal for the grade. Tied for CC#5 in the Grellman census. DWH #2249.

1840 N-2 R6+ (as a proof) Small 18 over Large 18. PCGS graded Proof 64 Brown. Tan and light reddish steel brown faded down from mint color with slightly darker reddish tan toning on the cheek and neck. The fields are nicely reflective but the mirrors are not especially deep. There is a small spot of slightly darker toning in the field left of star 10.5, a faint spot of reddish steel toning over the N in CENT, and a tiny horizontal planchet chip under the left foot of N in ONE. The fields do show very faint hairlines that come to life only with the aid of a good glass. Not quite perfect but the details are very sharp and the surfaces are free of any significant distractions. The overdate feature is bold. Listed as Proof-63 and CC#3 in the Denis Loring census of Proof Large Cents. Our grade is Proof-60+, CC#2 among the proof strikes listed in the Grellman census. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. The finest of 2 Proof Brown examples graded at PCGS. The other is Proof-60 Brown. DWH #1851 (PCGS # 397590) .

There is a thin vertical nick right of star 9 and a couple tiny rim nicks under the 0 in the date, plus a few shallow planchet voids on the rim at stars 12-13, as struck. MDS, die state b. The die defects under the date are weak but still visible and the die crack through the date and most stars is clear. CC#6 in the Grellman census. And it comes with a nice provenance. DWH #2006.

The surfaces are satiny and lustrous. M-LDS, die state c, with a series of small but clearly defined rim cud breaks from star 6 to star above star 10. Tied for CC#2. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS64RB (old green PCGS label included). This is the plate coin for the die state in the 2001 edition of the Grellman book. A choice, very attractive cent. DWH #2178.

M-LDS, die state c. The extension up from the top of the 4 is weak and blurry, but die centering has eliminated any chance to see rim cud breaks under the date. Great eye appeal, the surfaces covered with unaltered satiny mint luster from fine die flowlines. MDS, die state d. The bisecting obverse die crack is clear but not strong. A choice cent. The notable defects are a thin planchet lamination from the rim down through the U in UNITED to the wreath below, as struck, plus a tiny carbon spot close under the C in CENT and another over the left side of the N in ONE. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The dull die line at the dentils tips over MERI is clear. Our grade is MS64+, very close to MS65. Finest known by a small margin in the Grellman census, which contains only 5 confirmed mint state examples for this variety. 1840 N-10 R2 Large Date EF45. A mint state cent that has a scrape in the rim under the 84 of the date plus a series of rim nicks and shallow rim scrapes from star 2 to star 8. The surfaces inside the rims are choice except for a minor scuff left of star 6 and a few other microscopic marks. Nice eye appeal in spite of the rim marks. Lustrous light olive brown with a streak of slightly darker olive brown toning from the U in UNITED to the second S in STATES. Traces of faded mint color remain in protected areas, especially on the reverse. LDS, die state d (Newcomb’s old #11), with a strong rim cud at stars 9-10 plus a thin one down to star 11. This is the Grellman plate coin for the die state in his 2001 edition of the attribution guide for the series. It was selected for this purpose because the rim cuds are so clearly defined on this example. DWH #2179.

1841 N-1 R5 Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown. Attractive iridescent bluish steel and rose with more than a third of the original mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. The fields are nicely reflective and free of notable hairlines. The only defects are a pinprick under the right side of star 2, a small stain of slightly darker toning in the field close under the chin, and a small spot of darker toning right of the T in CENT. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal. A beautiful example of this proof-only variety. Our grade is Proof-64, tied for third finest known in the Grellman census. Also called Proof-64 but tied for CC#2 honors in the Denis Loring census of proof large cents. Either way, this is a very important proof large cent. 1842 N-2 R1 Small Date MS63. Lustrous bluish steel brown with 15-20% of the mint red remaining. There is a very faint scuff that barely alters the mint frost in the field left of star 10 and a small flake out of the planchet (as struck) at the dentils under star 10. Otherwise this cent is virtually flawless. Outstanding luster and eye appeal for the grade. E-MDS, die state a late. The die defects under the date are visible, although a bit blurry. CC#4 overall but finest known of the earlier die state. A beautiful example of the Small Date type of this year. DWH #2016.

1842 N-3 R3 Large Date MS60. Glossy medium brown and steel with 5% of the red remaining, mostly on the reverse. There are a half dozen tiny spots of darker olive toning on the obverse, strongest in the field before the chin, and a couple small nicks under the N in ONE. E-MDS, die state b. The fine die lines under UNI are gone. The obverse fields are satiny while the fields on the reverse are smooth and slightly reflective thanks to a fresh die polishing. Excellent eye appeal for the grade. (Note: The N-3 die variety was once delisted because it was thought to be a late state of N-8. Subsequent research has proven that the N-3 is indeed a distinct die variety from a marriage of the N-3 obverse die in a later die state and the N-4 reverse die in a later die state. 1843 N-4 R1 Petite Head with Reverse of 1844. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Lustrous steel brown and light chocolate with subtle overtones of bluish steel and sea-green in protected areas of the obverse and underlying very faded mint color showing through on the reverse. A spot of darker olive brown toning just off the tip of the nose, a larger one on the right edge of the hairbun, and a tiny tick on the top of the upright of the E in CENT are the only notable marks. LDS, die state d (Newcomb's #13). The rim cud under the 1 is bold, which is quite unusual for examples in the late die state, but all the other markers found on late state examples are the same on this piece. Called MS60 and tied for CC#20 in the Noyes census, his photo #31182. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#21 in the Grellman census. PCGS population 1; 3 in MS65 Brown graded for the variety.
